About Us

Cutting-edge, community-based, and constantly evolving, HELP has a twenty-seven year history of health and education services, aimed at preventing AIDS/HIV and other STDs through innovative, comprehensive, and accessible programs, including all-inclusive PrEP services  – the best tool available to our community to take control of your HIV status – available to anyone, whether or not you have insurance, AT NO CHARGE.

The HELP Center for LGBT Health & Wellness – your centralized source for HIV/AIDS and STD preventative services in North Texas.

Founded in 1994 to address a critical need to connect health education and prevention services to marginalized populations – those who found it difficult or impossible to access programs addressing their specific and unique characteristics in a culturally appropriate manner, HELP has consistently expanded and adapted. Our focus is on making vitally needed care available to at-risk adolescents and adults, HIV positive individuals, ethnic and sexual minorities, and the LGBT community as a whole.

How do we do this?

By eliminating financial barriers to preventative care.

By eliminating social barriers to preventative care.

By offering a safe and nurturing environment in which to learn the skills and behaviors necessary to remain both physically and mentally healthy.

And, soon, by providing a centralized venue for expanding access to prevention services and a secure and welcoming space for the North Texas LGBT community.

Access to Care

Our current programs – administered by a staff of 12, including the Executive Director, Program Director, 3 practitioners, 2 Medical Assistants, 4 prevention specialists, and clerical staff – include (in addition to the PrEP program) HIV testing, condom distribution, STI prevention, and Community Mobilization.

In 2018, HELP distributed 100,000 condoms, conducted 1,200 HIV tests, identified 17 new HIV infections and linked 100% of the newly diagnosed to care, and provided more than 800 at-risk individuals with more than $9 million in PrEP services – all free of charge.

HELP believes that financial pressures should not rob anyone of the dignity to determine when and how to make life choices and disclosures. Included in the above figures are 72 college students who are on their parents’ health insurance – but are not yet out to their parents. HELP privately pays for these students to get PrEP so they don’t have to use their parents’ insurance. As far as we know, we’re the only organization in the nation doing that.

In addition, HELP’s other programs and activities foster safety and education in the North Texas LGBT population.

When we mobilize as a community we give power to all types of change.
